Why is your server room worth paying attention to?

• Greater availability of your email system, CRM / ERP package and your PBX;
• Energy saving;
• A longer service life for your server environment.

For one organisation that may mean only a handful of small changes to the present set-up, while for another it may mean building entirely new server rooms.

In both cases, though, the functional design has to be thought through properly. We often come across handsome solutions fitted out with the most futuristic components. In practice those tend to be ‘unnecessarily expensive’ while adding little in the way of functional value. Price and necessity play an essential part during the design phase. When an entirely new room is built, for instance, we look at the best location for it, because the right choice of location saves a great deal of money.

Matters such as the layout, the cooling, the power supplies, the infrastructure and the security of server rooms (physical, logical and technical alike) are also taken into account during the design phase.

What counts in the design phase is cooperation between the facilities department and the IT department. These two departments will therefore have to work closely together at this stage.
